The Image Alignment program offers several methods of aligning images prior to stacking. The easiest method, for images requiring only translation,
is to use the Fourier transform cross-correlation method. This automatic alignment requires only a single click on one image and all of the other open
images will be aligned to this image with sub-pixel precision. For images that are not of sufficient quality for the automatic method, sub-pixel
alignment can still be obtained by a manual method of clicking on the same star in each image to be aligned.
For images acquired with alt-az mounted telescopes alignment requires rotation as well as translation. For these images it is necessary to select the
same two points in each image after which alignment will be done to the same sub-pixel precision as in the other methods.
The image Alignment program is also used to align and assemble images into mosaics, and to selectively repair defects such as meteor tracks.
